How to use this site: overview

Reading

Although we have divided the site into conventional topic-based pages, that’s not the way we hope or expect you will use it on a regular basis. The trick is to customize your experience by letting us know what you’re interested in. Then you can find everything you need on your home page. If you subscribe, you can also get this customized content as an RSS feed.

Writing

You can contribute to the site by writing or by submitting external links that you think are appropriate and interesting. We pay you for your contributions in points, which you can use towards a free RSS feed and then a free profile page (see later). Essentially, there are three kinds of things that you can write:

Articles/Blog posts

You can submit short articles about anything you like, within the scope of the site, by clicking the icon top right that looks like a pen. Then you click “Submit article”. If we think the article conforms to our minimum editorial standards, we’ll publish it and you’ll see the link on your profile page (if you have one). If we like it, we’ll publish it on the main feed.

Book Reviews

If you’d like to write a review of a book that we don’t yet have on the site (or that we do, but we’ve got no review yet), use the Submit Book Review link, again from the pen icon on the right. Full guidelines  on how to write are here. If you’re interested in reviewing a new book, we may be able to get you a review copy.

Commentary

If there’s something you’d like to say about an article that we’ve published on the site, you can add your commentary. All comments are moderated, and we’re looking for people with something substantial to add.

Recognition

By contributing good material, you can start to get a following. If you’re posting stuff that is particularly interesting, people will come to your page first, rather than looking at the bulk of stuff that has been contributed to the site. You’ll need a profile page to get this recognition, but if you’re contributing a lot of stuff, you can earn those points: they last for a year, and as long as you have at least 50, you can keep your profile page for free indefinitely.

As well as adding your own written material and links, you can also curate links from the site. Just click on the + sign to the right of the headline in the main listing box and choose “Add to favorites”. The article will now appear on your own page.

If you pay for a subscription, you can use your profile page as an archive of articles you’ve found useful. The URL will only be shared with others if you contribute external links or commentaries etc. If you’d like to keep the two private, you can also write with one user ID and read (and archive) with another.
